Math Champions is a peer-tutoring program at Tallahassee Community College that aids struggling math students so they can improve their skills. Skilled math students can receive a scholarship for tutoring.

TCC student Patrick Briggs is a struggling math student who is currently enrolled in Developmental Math (MAT0028) and has received help since the beginning of the Fall semester.

“It has helped me tremendously, and I’m just getting a grasp on things that I don’t understand,” Briggs said.

Math Champion Tiana Nunez Mendoza tutors Briggs.

“I’m actually studying to be a teacher, and I was thinking of being like a math teacher,” said Mendoza. “I was in math class, and my teacher noticed that I was helping people a lot. She said I should try out for Math Champions, so I signed up.”

Sharisse Turner, Dean of the Transitional Studies Division, supervises the Math Champions program. Turner, and several other deans, came together and created the program in 2017.

Administration and faculty members who created Math Champions noticed that students were underperforming in math.

“Maybe if we had a peer-to-peer group to assist students maybe we can see a difference,” Turner said.

To join this program, you can contact Dean Turner or Professor of Mathematics and Transitional Studies Brandi Del Rossi.
