The coronavirus pandemic has affected millions of people across the globe, including college students. Schools and colleges have shifted classes online for the rest of the semester, graduation and other school activities have been cancelled and students’ academic plans have been affected. Many Tallahassee Community College students returned home, some students stayed in town, but all of them are doing their best to fulfill their academic requirements to finish out the semester despite the societal upheaval.

This pandemic has affected my life as a TCC student because I had plans to see my grandmother in Atlanta for Spring Break. But because of the virus and the risk of traveling, I couldn’t see her. I was upset but I understand this is not a good time.

TCC student Tanise Ward has decided to stay in Tallahassee and work at Publix.

Unfortunately, I’ve been working at Publix during this pandemic, early morning shifts and late-night shifts, even getting called in on my off days.

It has been tough for me because I’m dealing with money and customers day in and day out. Before I come into work, I wipe and sanitize my area to kill bacteria.

Originally, Publix was open from 7 a.m. through 11 p.m. Now that this coronavirus pandemic has gotten worse, hours have been changed to 8 a.m. through 8 p.m.

Publix allows employees who need to self-quarantine if we want to, but we won’t get paid if we stay home. It’s really hard for me because I want to go back home to Orlando, but if I’m not working how will I be able to pay my bills? I have decided to stay in town and continue to work during this pandemic.
