The coronavirus pandemic has affected millions of people across the globe, including college students. Schools and colleges have shifted classes online for the rest of the semester, graduation and other school activities have been cancelled and students’ academic plans have been affected. Many Tallahassee Community College students returned home, some students stayed in town, but all of them are doing their best to fulfill their academic requirements to finish out the semester despite the societal upheaval.

The best description of my quarantine during the COVID-19 pandemic would be abject, bored misery. I am a Tallahassee local. I’ve lived just outside the city limits with my mother for the last 10 years and my maternal grandparents live just a few minutes up the road.  Before Spring Break, my mother planned on visiting her twin sister in Colorado Springs, and I was planning on going to Tampa with Jade, my girlfriend, to visit her family. I was excited.

I first learned about the virus finding its way to Florida a few weeks before Spring Break, and a week after Spring Break, my mother was stuck in Colorado for at least a month. Jade is staying home to help take care of her family while her mother is busy fighting the pandemic. I can’t visit my grandparents since my grandmother has Lupus. So when I’m not at work enduring the day slowly passing by, I’m confined to my house. Alone.

A few upsides: I’ve finished writing another book, so far everyone I care about is fine, the kava bar I frequent – Kavakaze Kava Bar – is still open, and gas is finally, genuinely, affordable. It’s a great time to have a hybrid.

Robert Murray is a third-year Tallahassee Community College student.
