Due to COVID-19, Tallahassee Community College has switched from in-person to almost all online classes this Fall semester. The Talon wanted to know how this change has affected the social life of students that are new to living in Tallahassee. We asked a few TCC students how life has been treating them since the big move to Tallahassee and online classes.

Austin Wyatt is a first-year TCC student from The Villages, Fla.

How have online classes affected getting to know people?

“It’s been harder. I haven’t got to meet as many people just because with everything on Zoom, I can’t go out and meet people in person in class.” -Marshall Widmann

“It’s affected it a lot for me just because I know that if I was in class, I would definitely be making more friends.” -Charli Cassidy

Charli Cassidy is a first-year TCC student from Leesburg, Fla.

“It’s definitely made it a lot harder to be able to socialize, even when we do have activities through Zoom and stuff. I mean, people don’t necessarily want to turn on their cameras and talk, so it’s definitely made socializing a lot harder.” -Austin Wyatt

“It’s definitely made it a lot harder because you aren’t able to sit in class and get to face to face meet people. It’s definitely affected my social life. -Carina Trujillo

What is one way that you have overcome this challenge?

“I try to keep an open mind with this. I try to just make friends with people in the Zoom calls and go from there.” -Marshall Widmann

“I’ve met up with people from my hometown that have moved here and became friends with some of their friends. It’s been really helpful moving here and being to see a few familiar faces.” -Charli Cassidy

Marshall Widmann is a first-year TCC student from Leesburg, Fla.

“I’ve been really trying to get involved with churches around the area and through that, I’ve been able to meet a lot of people, so that’s definitely helped.” -Austin Wyatt

“Just putting myself out there, trying to meet people outside of class or even through social media.” -Carina Trujillo

Carina Trujillo is a first-year TCC student from Leesburg, Fla.

Do you prefer being able to be less social or do you miss the freedom?

“I’m a more social person so I miss the freedom. I like being able to get out of the house and do stuff.” -Marshall Widmann

“I definitely miss the freedom. Being in a new town, I am ready to explore new things and meet new people” -Charli Cassidy

“Being less social in a way has its benefits because you’re able to reflect on yourself and work on things in that area. But I definitely miss the freedom a lot because I am a social person.” -Austin Wyatt

“I definitely miss the freedom of how things used to be before COVID-19. Hopefully one day we will able to go back to our normal” -Carina Trujillo
